Did We Miss the NEW MOON?

In September the new moon was seen on the 19th by observers/brethren in South Africa, but wasn’t visible in North America until the 20th. Even Jerusalem didn’t see the new moon until the 20th. So the question is, “Did we miss the new moon?”

There are 1000s of miles and a large Atlantic ocean between the two areas mentioned above. There are various distances between other locations, as well. When the children of Israel went into their “land” they were to then keep the Feasts (Num 15:2-3), but we are in different lands now striving to keep Yahweh’s Feasts for our own areas.  After brethren have looked/searched for the new moon for a couple clear nights and then see it, how can anyone tell them they’re wrong and that they must ignore their own eyes? Do we seriously think that those in Jerusalem would have accepted the sighting in South Africa for their own area?

Let’s think about this for a moment. Asking if we missed the new moon is like asking if we missed the start of the weekly Sabbath. When a person sees the sun go down in their area on a Friday night they know they have come into the 7th day Sabbath.

A biblical day always starts when the sun goes down past the horizon. Scholars point out the weekly 7 day pattern has not changed, even though calendars have.

When the new moon (the first visible crescent) shows after the conjunction (no visible  moon), we know that the new month has begun for us.  Watching for the new moon we see there is usually a couple nights when no moon shows at all, but then the first visible rebuilding phase of the moon shows with a distinct “finger nail” crescent with the horns pointing to the left in the western horizon after sundown. Look up and look for the light!

We had a blessed Feast of Tabernacles this year and we kept it according to the biblical time table for our own area. If we had traveled to South Africa for the Feast, we would have kept it according to the sighting there, just as we would have kept the weekly Sabbath with them in their land. For more information, see YAIY’s mini-study on the “New Moons and Jerusalem Time”.

The secular calendar for November of this year, taken from page 44 of Astronomy magazine, is shown with the working phases of the moon each day. Notice that there are at least two days where no moon (no light) is shown. Noteworthy also is the moon seems to show two comparable days of full illumination (full moon).  This is most likely why Yahweh doesn’t have us determine the Feasts from one full moon to the next, but rather from one new moon to the next.

“Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.  Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of Master.   And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and Yahweh will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
