Q. Is tithing still expected under the New Covenant?
A. The English word tithe and both the Hebrew and Greek words so translated mean “a tenth.” Israel was expected to give a tenth of the increase of their flocks and herds as well as their produce:
And all the tithe of the land, [whether] of the seed of the land, [or] of the fruit of the tree, [is] Yahweh’s: [it is] holy unto Yahweh. And if a man will at all redeem [ought] of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth [part] thereof. And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, [even] of whatsoever passes under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto Yahweh. (Leviticus 27:30-32 AV)
Tithing is the most fair way of giving to Yahweh. If one makes a hundred dollars a week, 10% of a hundred is ten dollars. If one makes a thousand dollars, the tithe is one hundred dollars. To whom much is given, much is required said Yahshua, Luke 12:48. If one takes in but little, little is required; and those taking in more can give more. Tithing is giving proportionately according to one’s means and Yahweh’s blessings. It is through tithing that we can reach others with the truth so neglected today, which is the third and fourth Commandments. Helping us reach out to others can be done spiritually by prayer to Yahweh each day. This will make the body of Messiah stronger and more dedicated.
To mail one YAIY BEACON magazine today costs over a dollar, plus the envelope and handling. Airmail overseas is even more expensive, up to 3 times more, but mail by boat is slower, and takes three months. Another help we can do is to be living Yahweh’s laws as a witness, and making a difference to help and guide others.
For some believers tithing can be a new truth. Yahweh certainly understands each situation, for He looks upon the heart and discerns our attitude. We are to give gladly and joyfully, not with murmuring and discontent:
Now therefore perform the doing [of it]; that as [there was] a readiness to will, so [there may be] a performance also out of that which ye have. For if there be first a willing mind, [it is] accepted according to that a man hath, [and] not according to that he hath not. (2 Cor. 8:11-12 AV)
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, [so let him give]; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for Yahweh loveth a cheerful giver. (2 Cor. 9:7 AV)
Notice that Leviticus 27:32 reveals the tithe is holy unto Yahweh. That is, it is to be used for a special purpose. It belongs to Him and should be used for His honor and glory. The tithes that are received at YAIY are used to proclaim the Good News of the coming Kingdom. We are grateful for those who continue to send us tithes and offerings for the work we carry on here at Kingdom City. Thanks to all who have helped us to get where we are today. We are now on TV, we send out DVDs and tapes thus sharing our Sabbath services with isolated brethren. We also have a content rich web site on the internet, and have websites for the children and sisters too.
Our YAIY BEACON magazine goes around the world. We also have a newsletter for members and those who support our efforts. Our aim is to teach the whole counsel of Yahweh so that many will take His words to heart and obey Him and become His son or daughter. Our hope is we can visit some of the scattered brethren in teh coming months. We pray His word will continue to produce fruit so that many will come to a saving knowledge of His name and follow in the footsteps of Yahshua.
At times we are surprised to receive a three dollar tithe check from a prisoner whose prison job may pay $30 a month. Our prayer is that Yahweh will reward all donors for their faithfulness. Although we send out literature and tapes without charge, we remind recipients they have a responsibility to pay their way and support those doing the work. Nothing is free in this world, and we all must assume our responsibilities and seek to provide for others along the way.
