Easter & The Hebrew Lunar Calendar?

A friend at work wrote to me, asking me if I knew anything about the following information she cut out of an article in a newsletter:

Easter this year is: Sunday March 23, 2008

As you may know, Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar. Found out a couple of things you might be interested in! Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) but that is pretty rare.

This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!). And none of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier! Here's the facts:

The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if you're 95 or older, you are the only ones that were around for that!). The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!

I replied:

How much do you want to know?  I’m assuming you’re referring to the idea that This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.” Well, this is what I can tell you: The formula for calculating Easter is correct, according to the Roman Catholic Church, who created the holiday. The Scriptural [Israelite, not Jewish] formula for Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread comes from Leviticus 23:4-7 “These are the Feasts of Yahweh, even holy convocations, which you shall proclaim in their Appointed Times. In the fourteenth day of the first month, at dusk, is Yahweh’s Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread unto Yahweh: seven days you must eat unleavened bread. In the first day you shall have a holy convocation: you shall do no servile work therein.”

A note about the above quote: The word “Feasts” is the Hebrew word mo-ed, which means “Appointed Times.” It is the Creator’s way of scheduling an appointment with those who praise Him. [when one says “HalleluYah,” they are speaking Hebrew and saying “We praise You, Yah.” “Yah” is the poetic form of “Yahweh.”] The phrase “the fourteenth day of the first month,” refers to the month of Abib, the first day of which is also the first day of the Scriptural year, which is determined by two phenomena: 1) the sighting of the “new moon,” [looking for the first sliver of the moon after sunset]. And, 2) the determination of harvestable barley [used for the sheaf wave offering, see Lev. 23:10]. When those two conditions are met, then the first day of the year is determined. [see Exodus 12:2 “This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.” This is when Israel left Egypt, foretelling of the Passover.]

Observe the month of Abib, and keep the Passover unto Yahweh thy Elohim: for in the month of Abib Yahweh thy Elohim brought thee forth out of Egypt by night.

The day after Passover is the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is a Feast of seven days. The ‘first and the last’ days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread are annual Sabbaths [not weekly Sabbaths].

Easter is the celebration that the Church created [in 325 A.D.] that replaces Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. They both are 8 days long. I say “replace” because the true significance of Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread and Pentecost are that they point directly to the Messiah, whose name is “Yahshua,” meaning “the Salvation of Yah.” [His name was transliterated from the Hebrew to Greek, “Yeshu,” then to the Latin, Yesus, then in about 1500 AD the letter “J” was invented, and His name was then called “Jesus.”]

The ancient, physical Passover lamb was an unblemished male lamb of the first year, which was sacrificed, the blood of which was placed on the door posts and lintels of their dwellings to protect the Israelites from the Destroying Angel, which killed the firstborn of the Egyptians, including the firstborn of all their livestock [the Tenth Plague leading to the Exodus, which means, “leaving the Houses of Bondage”. “Israel” means “the Prince of El” – so, exactly who is the Son of the Father, the Prince of the King, the Prince of Peace?]. Yahshua, the “Spiritual” Lamb of Yahweh, shed His blood that we might live eternally, protected from Satan, the Accuser. Thus, Yahshua fulfilled the “meaning” of Passover.

He fulfilled the Feast of Unleavened Bread as well. Leaven represents “sin.” Yahshua was wounded because of our sins and the penalty of sins (spiritual death) was removed by His death. (Isa 53:5 with commentaries—Barnes Notes, JFB,…) Believing in Him and following His path (obeying the Ten Commandments, like He did. See Revelation 14:12 and Hebrews 10:26), assures us of our redemption (when He returns).

Yahshua fulfilled one more of the Feasts of Yahweh, Pentecost. In the Old Testament, Moses received the Ten Commandments on Pentecost, called the “Feast of Weeks,” because it falls on the 1st day of the week (Sunday) after seven Sabbaths from the day of the Sheaf Wave Offering. In the New Testament, it was upon the Day of Pentecost that Yahshua sent the Holy Spirit (the mind, heart and power of Yahweh) to His disciples, after He ascended into Heaven, where He, alone, sits at the right hand of Yahweh.

There is one more fact that I would like to share. During the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Sheaf Wave offering (remember the barley harvest?) always falls on the first day of the week, which we have come to call, Sunday. This offering is called the Offering of the Firstfruits, and it again represents Yahshua the Messiah, THE Firstfruit of those Firstfruits who will be raised from the grave. He was lifted up into Heaven after being risen on the 7th Day of the Week (that’s another study) and then descended back to earth to spend 40 more days on earth before ascending back into Heaven.

As you can probably tell, I am zealous for the ideas I’ve expressed above; and, I really appreciate you asking. I hope this information stimulates your thoughts, and I hope you have more questions. By the way, I am waiting for reports of the barley harvest in Jerusalem to determine when the first month of this year will be. Shall I let you know?

Thanks!

Lester Conrad Passes

Lester Conrad, a faithful servant of Yahweh, passed away on March 14th, 2008. He had attended the Feast of Tabernacles with us at Camp Woodland Hills this last year and all were blessed by his positive personality and by the messages he was able to present. For years after being baptized he’s been striving to share Yahweh’s Word to others. Survivors are his wife, children and grandchildren. They are some of the fruit of his labor, as many of them believe because of what he shared with them. There is no telling how many others he touched by sharing a word or two, and he is known to have handed out many writings and cassettes teaching and expounding upon Yahweh’s Word. He will be missed by those who got to know him and we will not forget him as we continue to do what we can to also promote Yahweh’s way of life and His Messiah to others who may listen.

Abib vs Vernal Equinox

Abib (This year in April)     Vernal Equinox (This year in March)

Early ears (Lev 2:14)

Hebrew: #24 Abib

Ex 9:31;12:2; 13:4; Duet 16:1 “observe Abib

(one calendar based on agriculture and moon: “Month of Abib,” Deut 16:1; Ex 34:18)

Ps 104:19 Moon for seasons

Abib instructed as a calendar

No astrologers needed in ancient Israel to determine an equal day and night

Yahweh can change the Appointed Times (moeds) by changing the weather: Ex 9:29; Ps 135:6-7; Jer 10:13; Zech 10:1; 14:17-18.

Abib defined:

“Also if you bring a grain offering of early ripened (Abib) things (barley in the case of the new year: Ex 9:31; 12:2; 13:4) to Yahweh, you shall bring fresh heads of grain roasted in the fire, grits of new growth, for the grain offering of your early ripened things,” Lev 2:14. NASU

“Observe the month (new moon) of Abib (early ears of barley), and keep the passover unto Yahweh thy Elohim: for in the month of Abib Yahweh thy Elohim brought thee forth out of Egypt by night,” Deut 16:1

Equal day and night

Suggested Hebrew word: #8622 Tequphah

1 Sam 1:20 (9-month gestation period)

Ex 34:22 Cycles of Pentecost and FOT

Ps 19:6 Sun rotates and runs its coarse

2 Chron 24:23 End or close of the year

Gen 1:14-16; Ps 136:8-9 “sun rules day, moon rules night” (one calendar based on sun and moon? “Pagan Calendars” “Lunisolar”)

Josh 10:12-14; 2 Kings 20:8-11 Sun for signs

Nisan showed pagan influence on Judah during and after their captivity (Neh 2:1; Est 3:7)

Astrologers needed to determine spring, summer, and winter equinoxes

Unless the fixed pattern (Jer 31:35) of the sun or moon’s coarse is changed, no controlled change can be made.

Vernal equinox defined:

“the time when the sun crosses the plain of the earth’s equator, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth and occurring about March 21st.”
