Q.  Why do you not teach obedience to all Yahweh’s laws (613 of them!), rather than just the Ten Commandments?

A. Thank you for your interest in the teaching of Judaism’s 613 Laws. There is certainly nothing wrong in teaching the laws of Yahweh. According to our information (such as The Companion Bible note on Matthew 22:36) the scribes divided the laws up as 248 affirmative for the bones of the body, and 365 negative for the number of days in the year. Thus we have 248 + 365 = 613.  These 613 laws are the concept of the scribes, and not known by such in the Bible.
In reaching out to others with the truth, we find many of the interested are right out of churchianity where they have been taught “the law is done away.”  Our goal is to convince them that keeping Yahweh’s laws is expected of us as Yahshua said, “If you will enter into life, keep the Commandments,”  Matthew 19:17.
The Savior was then asked which ones, and He restated those Commandments dealing with our relationship to our fellow man.  The rich young ruler could identify with the Ten Commandments.  Even though he was apparently proper in his worship of Yahweh and obeyed the first five, those dealing with his fellow man showed he was selfish and self-centered, which Yahshua had subtly pointed out.
We feel all of Yahweh’s law is based upon the Ten Words.  The Sabbath includes the weekly Sabbath, the annual Sabbaths and the Sabbatical/Jubilee cycle as well.  The Ten Commandments are a part of the Covenant Yahweh made with His people, “...and he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments."  (Exodus 34:28 AV) (See also Deuteronomy 4:13; 9:9 and 11.)
To tell the newly interested that one is expected to obey 613 commands overwhelms him. He did not want to obey any of the Ten Commandments, how can we load him up with over 600 more?  And how can we base those 613 on the Bible when obedience to 613 commandments nowhere appears in Scripture?
In teaching the Ten Commandments we are on solid Biblical ground. Once the convert accepts the Ten Commandments as a way of life, and the basis for the Covenant, he will learn more. As he grows in grace and knowledge, his understanding and comprehension will reveal other things. He should add to his faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge, 2Peter 1:1-5. The 613 laws will soon become a part of his understanding.
